"Happy Holidays" from here too.

I also have a rough time with holidays due to loss of a couple loved ones. Every year I tell myself "I'll be better next year & get involved" , but never seem to get it accomplished even though I have guilty feelings.

This time of year is hard for many of us. It reminds us of those we have lost, of all we don't have, what we can't give. On top of that it is dead of winter (technically the start, but we in MT know better) and lack of sun can add to depression. We also tend to stay in more and go out less due to weather and that can make us depressed. We need to do more online contact in that case and 'talk' to our friends.

I can't afford the expensive light therapy products for SAD ( Seasonal Affective Disorder) but I found full spectrum light bulbs at Walmart and other stores for under $5.00 and got a clip on style lamp for my PC desk. I can't be sure it is helping, but it's not hurting! For under $15.00 I made my own light therapy and am using it.

Remember this site is always a place to come for support for all sorts of stuff not just PC's. I am also on Live Messenger (JeanInMontana at msn.com) and Facebook. Montana Menagerie has a Facebook page. I'm going to do an online class for PC & Internet safety, basic PC maintenance soon.

Wow, I came to MM to ask a question & ended up with a 40 min. lesson ( 'cuz I had to look up the definition of "full spectrum" ) on light bulbs, something I never really gave thought to before. Thanks Jean, I'm gonna give it a try.

Also as long as you brought it up, I've been wanting to open an account at Facebook since my daughter passed away in Sept. because my ex husband has posted lots of her pics there but I've read so many negative articles about lack of privacy, etc. concerning Facebook that I've shied away. Are there certain things to do or not do at the site that would make me feel more comfortable about using it?

Thanks again, now I'll go find the proper forum for my question.

7. The end of spam. What?
Last year saw the lowest level in spam in years. Why? Criminals go where the people are. Both are moving on to more sophisticated communications platforms like Facebook. Spam is so 2004. Facebook wall posts apparently from friends asking for money are much more 2011.

“Social media connections will eventually replace e-mail as the primary vector for distributing malicious code and links,” McAfee says.” The massive amount of personal information online coupled with the lack of user knowledge of how to secure this data will make it far easier for cybercriminals to engage in identity theft and user profiling.”

Tweets from “friends” will lead to widespread infections. Facebook chats will trick people into giving up personal information, or clicking on malicious links. Promiscuous friending will allow bad guys to connect with all of your friends, creating an easy attack vector with a wide footprint. All of this will happen in an environment where consumers tend to trust more than traditional Web pages or e-mail -- in other words, their guard is down, and attacks will be up.

“This shift will completely alter the threat landscape in 2011,” McAfee says.

McAfee has something to gain by saying alot of this but facebook
is a dangerous place but so is the internet in general but with
right knowledge and the right tools we can be safe as we let ourself's
be

i think sandboxie would help with most things about facebook and i
put it on alot of peoples computers heck i preach sandboxie so much
my dad won't do his online banking without it he uses it all the time

http://www.sandboxie.com/

also a good rollback or imaging software is a good thing most cost $
but there are some free ones out there like Keriver 1-Click Restore Free
i'v been watching and wanting to play with when i get time

http://www.keriver.com/

but i use VMware player with a Win xp virtual machine if i know there
could be something bad somewhere i used to use VirtualBox also
thay also helped me learn how to install and use Linux OS's
i can also test software with a virtual machine and if i break something
i can start over

http://www.virtualbox.org/

http://www.dedoimedo.com/index.html <---- good info on alot of stuff

and Jean where are you having the Online classes at is it on FaceBook?
and when ?

You need to set your privacy settings how you want them. By default they give out way to much information. Don't click on links sent in IM's or for 'free' what ever.

Re: Happy Holidays :) ............ Facebook

Postby grits » Thu Dec 30, 2010 1:35 pm

Thanx Jean. I'm definitely not a "clicker". As a matter of fact I'm almost embarrassed to say that even here at MM I've just recently clicked on links even from "the mods" without first checking it out. You wouldn't believe the size of "the yellow streak down my back". :rotf: Actually, that's why I asked you about Facebook, didn't even want to take a chance going there.

Facebook and it's users are not a real savvy bunch. I see lots of hacked PC's sending spammed links via IM's and wall posts. @ Grits I can help you if you want to set up a secure account and I have confidence you have the common sense to not fall victim.

@ James, I want to do the class using Skype for real time voice and stream it from here. I have a website and GOATD has given away some great looking screen capture software with streaming capabilities. I know I learn by 'seeing' it and hearing about it. I also know I am not the only one LOL. If I can't visualize what ever I often just don't get it. A picture is worth a 1000 words is always going to hold true and so many people do not know the most basic things about a PC. I don't expect to get rich but if I can pay the phone bill I'm happy.

:agre: about pics / screen captures. I can't tell you how many times I've read & re-read something that wouldn't penetrate my thick skull, then come across a screen shot & almost feel embarrassed 'cuz it's soooo simple.

Jean, I recently ran across a real scary article about Facebook that maybe you'd like to read but I don't think this is the proper area for it (or even the subject of screen shots) so IF I can figure out how to get a link or whatever posted, which area would be best?

Thanx,
grits

oh,oh, just remembered, I have a big time case of CRS so hope I can find the article. :rotf:

I don't think I've ever posted a link in a board before so hope it's just a matter of copy/paste which I'll try. I came upon the article when I checked out a link (from a different forum I visit) about password managers.

FYI you can use the BB code button URL also, but you did just fine. I sometimes prefer seeing the URL so if I spot a bad site I know ASAP.

That site is interesting and the Facebook article ( I skimmed it) I have to agree with their view. I have one account I use with my real name, but I don't show my details to anyone I don't know well. I would say the majority of Facebook is not 'real' world identities and you can report a profile as fake. My opinion is you are a fool to give out your life on any site, whether it's Facebook or MontanaMenagerie.

No James, that is not what I mean. LOL sharing stuff is not the same as people who post telephone, address, email and pictures of them and their kids. I've seen that on Facebook.

The reason I said I hoped it was just a matter of copy/paste is that I've never understood or learned all there is to posting. All the stuff that's above this typing box is "greek to me", I don't know what most of the words stand for or how to use them.

Got any idea of where I could find a simple, maybe with pics/screenshots, instruction manual?

Thanx,
grits
oops, scrolled down to "preview" for spelling before I hit "submit" & there's more "stuff" that's "greek"

Grits if you use the FAQ link right under the MM logo there is a lot of info about how stuff works, then if you need more let's start a new thread, I'm betting you are not the only one who will need some help. I hope anyway I would really like to get this site paying for itself at a minimum and if it can pay for more :chr:
