How to Behave On an Internet Forum

Postby JeanInMontana » Fri Mar 07, 2008 1:29 pm

I doubt there is anyone among us that has not had the occasion to encounter the dreaded troll of the WWW. We had one recently at Malwarebytes an old critic of MWB products taking a stab at the newest. One of the members posted this link How To Behave On An Internet Forum it is hilarious while being so spot on.

I debated adding it to the TOS, but decided that topic needs to stay serious. This is very good advice and how one should behave on a forum. It is also funny. :rotf:

Share it all over. It is how one should behave, even if funny. Humor often hits home better than a dead pan lecture. If and when I get confirmation my class will run this Spring I will include it along with email etiquette as part of the curriculum.

My hearing not being what it used to be, it's hard for me to understand. Though often the context helps, I still miss a lot of what the narrator says for the simple reason that he talks just *too darn fast*.

Fortunately, I found a workaround.

With "Fraps" I managed to capture the entire video (when set to full screen) and with "Nero Vision" I compressed it to a reasonably sized video-file.

Finally "Cyberlink PowerDVD" can play the video-file at half speed while compensating the pitch of the audio. The narrator voice's pitch changes little but he speaks 50% slower, much easier to understand.

"How to Behave On an Internet Forum.mpg" (55 MB) (*) is available for download at http://www.box.net/shared/static/3blsk2eb9j.mpg

(Video cards like nVidia GeForce and AMD-ATI Radeon often have CyberLink PowerDVD bundled with their installation CD's.)

(*) WARNING @ moderators/admins.
I don't known if this video-file is a violation of copyright. If it is :sry: , please don't shoot me but do gently :rdmd: and :hgs: me, and I shall immediately remove the video-file from my webstorage. Also please edit this post to remove the offending link. TIA.

I can't see it to make a call one way or the other. All I get is a page with the QuickTime icon.

This is weird.

I downloaded the file (the one I uploaded) from the link I gave. http://www.box.net/shared/static/3blsk2eb9j.mpg

On my computer the video plays perfectly well with all 4 of my players:

Cyberlink PowerDVD 6.0
Windows Media Player 9
VLC media player 0.9.9
Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1 (came with Quicktime Alternative)

Though only PowerDVD is able to adjust the audio pitch.

This leads me to suspect you guys lack the correct codec. But I have no clue exactly which one it is, though I have an inkling that the Quicktime Alternative installation package may have it.

Finally, in case it matters, I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3.

It worked finally. I think the server they are on is messed up. That clip is also on YouTube.

You really should update WMP to the current on for security reasons. I am using a brand new PC so it's not codecs here either .
