Woe Is Me Wednesday

Woe Is Me Wednesday

Postby JeanInMontana » Wed Apr 30, 2008 11:34 am

It's really hard for me to begin anything without a string of profanity. More snow today. Yup that's right the last day of April and I woke to SNOW!! :cldy:

I had the AC adater for my laptop fry yesterday. Since I live in the sticks, Radio Shack thought they might be able to build one, I didn't think that sounded good. So with the last gasps of the battery I managed to order a replacement. It has to make it's way from Memphis to Montana. Fed-Ex say 5/5 delivery date. I will surely be a total drooling idiot by then or my house will be clean. HP said 3-5 business days and it shipped yesterday so :x: please Fed-Ex do not crash on some island with my AC adapter. 040686081284706 is the magic number.

Why is it when stuff like this happens, you start thinking oh, well I can call so & so and then you realize that their number is in some eimail you have saved in your POP3 webmail. I can't even turn on any PC I own. Why? I don't know. Last time I used the desktop I thought I had infected it with something nasty digging around nasty sites. I still think it might be infected, but I can't even get it to turn on!! I could take it to Radio Shack, yeah, the same one that bulds AC adapters. That's probably what I will end up doing too.

I will try to get them to just make it turn on. The guy thinks Defender is a good product and last time I took it in he installed it!! I told him it was not infected and that I didn't want anything installed. But again there is no choice unless I want to take it thirty miles.
Maybe once the lappy is going again I can use my own forum to fix it?? Arrrg

I'm asking everyone to send good energy to the Fed-Ex gods, for a speedy delivery. If you remember my phone number give a call I have too much time on my hands. :rotf:

Send good energy? I'm sending a Linux cd. Boot from it on one of the computers that doesn't work and you're good to go...well, after you get the cd.

Good vibes, good vibes.

Neither will boot! One runs on battery and AC adapter, the adapter fried and the batteries are dead. The other, won't turn on. It's in the shop today and due to be equiped with new power supply before day's end.

Well I don't know about getting it off of it. But I did buy a 4 gig thumb drive!! The prognosis on the desktop was total failure. Not sure I buy that completely, but for now I have no choice.

Since when does a pc have 'total failure'? That's bull. Power supply probably and what are they? Ten or twenty bucks for a 240 watt? TigerDirect.com or Frys.com or I'll go down to Fry's and get one and ship it to ya.

He said it failed to post . I don't know what that is. I have dealt with this kid before, he knows everything. He hates my brand of PC. They were going to charge me $50 - $60 for power supply. I brought it home.... the HD is worth something if the rest is fried.

Post failure can be caused by bad RAM, bad motherboard, bad CPU; or any combination of those.

Yeah...so what course of action other than to say bye bye and keep the HD? It's a 6 year old machine, I was going to keep it and use as a test box, but I can't afford to rebuild it AFAIK, not sure I even possess the skill to do that. I do have a new stick of RAM for it. And it was BSODing before I stopped using it, but I thought I had got a nasty poking around in places know for that.

If you got spare RAM for it, swap out the RAM and see if it boots. Otherwise the Mobo or CPu is fried. In that case replace the system. Cost of a mobo & CPU for the system can often exceed the cost of a new system.

If it boots but seems fubarred, before you toss it, wait for the live Linux cd's to arrive :) And, I have a few spare parts here and there if you want to play. Maybe I'll just send ya a care package :)

Well I will try the RAM swap, but I do think the power supply might be the problem. I am not going to rebuild it buying new parts. It's not worth that. When school starts this fall I will apply for a PC loan and get something to make you all cry. :rotf:

The ability to quote multiple posts would be nice. Guess, I need to search for a MOD that will allow quoting multiple posts.

I'm shopping for a new system myself. Need to replace my Linux box.

Looking at this: http://www.ascendtech.us/customkititems ... 64X24600PC

Customized of course.

Quote of multiple posts, and I just noticed there is no alternative font choices? Now I'm taking us off topic I know, but also wonder about the custom profile stuff I see. Options to add, but I have no idea what to add or what can be added?
