MS sneaking a Windows Update on Windows

Postby W3FSY » Tue Sep 30, 2008 1:55 pm

 I guess MS can override your Automatic Update settings. (My settings are set to "Notify me, but don't automatically download or install Windows Updates.") The setting is unchanged.

I read at another MSN Helpsite today that MS rolled out last month and also this month a Windows Update that is being installed without your knowledge. Originally they were supposed to roll out Windows Update Agent 7.2.6001.784 with SP 3 windows update, but it was not done then. After checking my History, I found out it was downloaded and installed on Aug. 19th as I already had SP 3 installed on my computer since May 9th. Some are just receiving the update this month (Sept.), so you might check your Windows Updates "History" at the Windows Update site.

"Windows Secrets" made mention of this WU, also.

You'll get a new Windows Update, like it or not

:agre: Actually, the update is not "Bad" to have as it gives MS some better knowledge as to what Windows Updates are necessary on your machine. It's just the way it was downloaded without your knowledge. If your system would of crashed due to the MS update; then there would of been some concern as the update does not appear in Add/Remove Programs.

I come from the school of MS doesn't need to know anything about my machine period. The need to fix their security holes and I'll be just fine. Force installing on my machine is not the best option for that. That is just how malware works. :bgmd:

Here we go again! MS plans on rolling out another WU Upgrade you can read about here at PC World:

http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/a ... again.html :link:

Last evening, I got a Dell "Alert" that I should download and install Microsoft's .NET Framework 2.0 to prevent occassional crashes. (I never saw anthing like when my son had logged on and there was a "temporary log-on".) I told him to log off and re-start the computer. Later, I checked and saw there was an alert to upgrade to .NET Framework 2.0 as I had .Net Framework v1.1.4322.2032. After installing 2.0, I visited MS WU site and had to download and install Service Pack 1 (x86) which has Dr. Watson and 8 other updates to it. It must have to do with MS's earlier "Windows Update Agent 7.2.6001.784" scanning and finding "Errors" to my Windows XP OS. (That is just my understanding as to why I was alerted to upgrade to .NET Framework 2.0). Seems like WU's are not just a one time - once a month deal anymore.

WinPatrol alerted me to an installer going to start with every boot. I went to the Plus info and its associated with Defender! I didn't allow it to run. I will NOT have that crap on my system. This is how malware behaves.
