defragmenting the dumb C:\$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J:$DATA

Postby lurkingatu2 » Wed Feb 27, 2008 2:52 am

hello

dang what is up with windows live messenger and this usn journal beeing fragmented
in C:\$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J:$DATA and windows defragmenter stoping at 14% and saying
some files can't be defraged i have to have windows messenger for my isp (msn dialup)
and was using windows messenger 7.5 and upgreaded both my pc's to the live one and
thay both ended up with not beeing able to defragment this usn journal

i use and like jkdefrag but it would not work so i tryed auslogics disk defrag and
on my newer pc after trying in safe mode and normal mode one of them worked but on
my older pc it did not work so i tryed like 6 other defrag programs some would do
a boot defrag and nothing worked so then i tryed perfect disk 2008 and it worked
after a 2 and a half hour download (got to love dialup)

and i see on google i'm not the only one with this problem and i know that the
windows defrag program is not that great but what a bunch of poo i also seen on
google that even when live messenger was beta it still had this problem

now if i just had a job and a c card and $40 i'd buy perfect disk as it seems to
do a great job but it fragmented the returnil partition even though it's not
mounted so i had to use jkdefrag for that

thanks microsoft :pnch:

You sure that file path and name is right? I have nothing of the sort. I use WLM too.

Don't dollar signs usually mean virus?

I wish I could be of more help but that log doesn't tell me anything unfortunately. Someone here should be able to tell something from it.

I ran across a post this morning on CNET's (Spyware, viruses & security) Forum that you might check out while I was looking for updates for some of my security programs. The person was using programs that you are using, but the problem was not the same. The person was using Comodo firewall, Avira A.V. and Counterspy - programs I'm not familiar with. I use Online Armor (Free version) and know from looking at their forum that persons with Comodo keep switching back and forth to Online Armor for a firewall. Are you using Comodo long enough to have all your programs and exe's entered and do you have anything blocked that would cause your defrag to stop?

http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6132_102-0. ... ID=2716797

You didn't make any mention as to the amount of "Free Space" you have on your Hard Drive when doing a defrag. HD size? All Internet Temp Files deleted? Large History file saved using your Firewall? Do you clear your System Restore Dates before defragging as they do take a large chunk out of your disk space?

Just mentioned a few things you might check out, lurkingatu2, in hope, that they could be of help.

The USN journal is a log of fixed size that records all changes that take place on NTFS 5.0-formatted partitions. NTFRS monitors the NTFS USN journal file for closed files in FRS replicated directories as long as FRS is running.
From here :link:

With that info it would be normal I think to have an added USN journal.

I can't make much sense of the JK log but this 18:23:13 4 39992246272 4 C:\$BadClus:$Bad:$DATA seems to say bad cluster? Or disk error? Have you ran error check? I have been using the Auslogic defrag program I put in the freeware and really like it.

If you want to have a second opinion on infection, follow the instructions at the top of that forum and we can see what it shows.

Re: defragmenting the dumb C:\$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J:$DATA

Postby lurkingatu2 » Wed May 21, 2008 1:49 pm

well this is how i fixed the usn journal and it seems to work use at your own risk

To delete an active USN change journal on drive C, type:

fsutil usn deletejournal /d c:

type cmd in the run box which will open a window in DOS type "fsutil usn deletejournal /D C:"
without the quotes now if you have messenger on your C drive type fsutil usn deletejournal /C:
exactly as it appears here with the space and the colon, or use D or whatever partition its on,
this will then delete the usn journal, go to services and look for the messenger reader usn journal
reader service and disable it, I would if you have disabled it already restart it first before you
run the command then disable it after, now reboot do an offline defrag and that issue should not happen,
since I have done that I have had no more major metadata defragmention issues
