I've got it back :)

Postby MysteryFCM » Tue Dec 18, 2007 12:17 am

Thanks to my friend giving me one of his spare machines (1.7Ghz, 256MB ram, 40GB HDD), I've got Ubuntu back :)

I still can't get the latest version of it installed, so have had to go with an older version, which will do for now ..... but it means I can finally get working on beating the issues I had with it last time.

So far the good points are;

1. Installation and booting times are ALOT better than previously
2. I don't know whether it's because I remembered what I had to do last time or what but, getting Opera installed was also ALOT easier (though it seems I can't remove Firefox??)
3. Connecting it to the network took a few seconds, as opposed to yonks

I've still got one or two issues to work out, but if all goes well, I'll be keeping it alot longer than I did previously ..... and will also be testing alternate distro's again.

Hmmm...well, some Linux is better than no Linux. I'm curious why the most recent wouldn't install. And Opera finally got on the bandwagon I believe and worked on the Linux end of things. As far as removing Firefox, I have never been successful at removing something. Never tried that hard though :) Glad your "Back in the Ubuntu Saddle'.

You say Gutsy won't install? Did you burn your own disk or get it shipped? I'm just wondering about disk errors because to me that's what I read into that back in June. I'll tell ya Steven, I have installed Ubuntu so many times on so many pc's and have never run into the frustrations you do. The one I'm on now I installed my own Gutsy burn (the tester from months ago) just a few weeks ago and have not had a problem. I wish there was more I could do to help you.

I had several copies shipped to me, and burnt my own after finding they wouldn't work ..... neither method worked :(

But you're up now right? Have you tried sudo apt-get dist-upgrade or sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -- fix-missing

I had to go with the following as the apt-get option failed miserably;

Code: Select all

gksu "update-manager -c"

Alas it's still not gonna be the latest release as I can only apparently upgrade to 6.10 from 6.06 :(, and so far, it's failed on whatever the "Aide" is ????

Currently at Fetching and Installing .... yada yada yada, with 6 mins left, I'm hoping everything goes smoothly as I've had the upgrade running for over 2 hours now :(

Couldn't use the upgrade from CD option the following mentions as it refused to upgrade from the CD ...... (same thing as trying to install the latest ver from scratch)

Based on what I'm seeing in the terminal window, I don't think this is gonna go smoothly (last error was something about an index control file and a value or some such being AWOL)

Knew it was too good to be true :( ........ update only partially installed, with a failed error for "aide" (whatever that is), no matter whether I told it to upgrade it or keep the existing version ...... apparently the failure "could make the system unstable" :shock:

I'm trying to go to 7.04 to see if it'll work ......

I still can't imagine why you had so many issues. I would love to have been a little mouse on your shoulder watching your installs. :shsevl:

Well, I've seemingly lost the plot again as I've just installed Ubuntu on my laptop using the "Wubi" installer - which annoys me greatly for two specific reasons;

1. It has to download the Ubuntu files (600MB+) before it can do anything
2. Whilst claiming to be an installer, and finishing fairly quickly (little over 45 mins or so), I then had to wait another hour for Ubuntu itself to install, setup and configure itself after Wubi re-booted the computer ......... shouldn't Wubi have already done this? thus saving Ubuntu having to do it?

Finally, I had 17GB spare space on my data partition, which I installed Ubuntu onto, and it now has only 6GB free ?>! .... and even more annoyingly, I can't see the rest of the damn files on that partition, when in Ubuntu (can only view them when booting back into Windows).

On the plus side however, even though my laptop is fairly old and slow (550Mhz, 320MB Ram), it installed Ubuntu 8.04, and this seems extremely fast compared to older versions. Even better though, is that I was able to ditch Firefox in favour of Opera in under 15 mins 1rokon

Back into Windows now though as I needed access to e-mail and whatnot, but stay tuned ....... if I can find a way of accessing the rest of the files on the partition (the partition editor seems to be missing for some reason - it's not in the usual menu'), then I may keep it installed (otherwise it's not gonna be of much use).
